The audio clip is "Rosin the Beau," played with a pair of hammered dulcimers taking the lead and harmony and the lap dulcimer in the background doing soft chords.

The Pelican Pickers

We are an outreach of the Shalimar Baptist Church. Don Kirby, the music minister, founded the group in September 1999. We play Appalachian mountain lap dulcimers primarily, but augment our sound with the banjo and mandolin, guitar, Irish penny whistle, bowed psaltery, fiddle, harmonica, shuttle pipes, Native American flute, silver flute, autoharp, and hammered dulcimer, depending on which of our members are present at a gig. Members are from Fort Walton Beach, Shalimar, Niceville, and surrounding areas.

The Songs

Most of the songs we play come from the 1800s or earlier and from the early 1900s. Dulcimers were popular in the Appalachian Mountains and you would find them in North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee, and North Georgia; and the mountain dulcimer is the state musical instrument of Kentucky. Today clubs exist throughout the United States; see www.everythingdulcimer.com for locations.

Enjoying Music and Serving Our Local Community

As volunteers with other commitments/jobs, our time is unfortunately limited. We are open to performing locally, however; and what we consider ideal is twice a month, early evening (if weekday) to a listening audience, and about 1 hour in length. Our typical gigs are church dinners, retirement homes, libraries, hospitals, and special weekend events such as Saturday in the Park, art festivals, and dulcimer festivals around Florida and Alabama.

If you have an event that you would like us to consider performing, click Calendar to determine availability and write us at pelicanpickers@embarqmail.com. You are also welcome to experience a Monday night jam session, and we can chat during the 7:15 coffee break. If you would like to join the jam, we play in DAA and DAD tuning, but mostly DAA and will have a loaner book available for your use.  Beginners are welcome.

The Pelican Pickers is a group of dulcimer players and musician friends who meet weekly to play, learn, and share.

We believe in the power of music and in the ability of the dulcimer to put music in the hands of everyone.
